Congrats to the Vancouver Canucks

25 05 2011

My hometown Vancouver Canucks won last night to go to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time 17 years. Meaning I was a little preoccupied from doing anything else yesterday. Tomorrow will have a foreign language review up.

No Foreign Language Thursday film today. Will be reviewing full “Apu” trilogy next week and may do a small thing on “Twilight Samurai” later tonight.

Mission Statement

30 04 2011

Well, I guess it is appropriate to start out by giving a statement of intent with this blog. Quite simply, it is to find what are, in my opinion, the very best movies ever made in cinematic history. This quest came about for two reasons:

1)  Whenever I would have discussions with fellow cinephiles I would often find that they hadn’t seen one or two of my favorite movies and I hadn’t seen one or two of theirs. To bridge this gap I decided to create list of hundreds upon hundreds of the most acclaimed movies of all time and watch one or two every day. This way I could finally feel like I had my own definitive list, without apparent holes, of the greatest movies of all time. I will not only watch movies I haven’t seen, but also films I just haven’t seen recently.

and 2) To get my feelings of certain movies down right when I watched them. I always feel that when recalling movies, I remember just the good or the bad (or maybe sometimes the ugly), and not the movie as a whole. Hopefully by getting my thoughts down soon after a viewing I can create a more appropriate list without my own memory’s bias coming into play.

Movies I watch will be chosen at random and given a score out of 100 based on plot, acting, atmosphere, writing, ingenuity, etc. I hope to update this blog with a post at least once every weekday starting Monday with the two movies which inspired my name: Once Upon A Time In The West (1968) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
